If you’ve ever envisioned yourself teaching yoga or are simply looking to deepen your practice, you’ve come to the right place. Picture this…

It’s 7pm on a balmy Monday night. You walk into a candlelit room, electric with the anticipation of bodies, breath and spirit. Your students fill nearly every inch of floor-space, as you make your way, greeting and hugging half the room, to the teachers’ mat.

Settling in, you share some thoughts, maybe a few chants and focusing breath-work. You close your eyes to hear the deeply-attuned inhales and exhales of 50 students, rising and falling in unison as hearts begin to beat stronger, bodies are set in motion and sweat begins to bead in a juicy, flowing celebration of movement. You ease through the pulsing room, guiding this magical swell of energy, smiling in every cell of your being as you glisten with pride, compassion and energy. This is not just living, this is being alive. Pure ecstacy!

The next morning, you throw on a t-shirt and yoga-pants and head over to meet the first of four private clients that day. Your 7am-er, Annie, greets you with a warm smile and shares a bit about her week, as roll your mats out in a sunny corner of the living room.

You spend the next hour working as a team to gently unwind her body and deliver Annie into a glowing, deeply-relaxed state, before leaving with her eternal gratitude, a warm-hug and $100 in your pocket. Three hours of work later, you end your day at noon, feeling great about the impact you’ve had on four lives…and the $400 in your pocket isn’t so bad, either! Do that five days a week and your four-hour days earn you six-figures…and leave you feeling great about the impact you are having on each person’s life!

Now, ask yourself, would I like this to be my reality? It can be …if you’re ready to make it happen.

The Demand is Large And Growing!

The need for great class teachers and private instructors is quickly expanding from the major yoga hubs in big cities to suburbs and small towns all over the country. Over the last 30-years, millions of people have discovered this amazing practice and, as we experience massive growth in the over-50 population in the next 20 years, millions more will clamor for the healing, stress-relieving, life-enhancing impact. Especially, in a private setting.

So, if you love yoga, if you already talk to everyone you know about it…maybe it’s time to take the next step and invest in a nationally-recognized training program that’ll equip you to ease, at your pace, into the world of teaching yoga classes and private yoga clients. Sounds great, right? So, what’s the best way to get started?

Finding the “Right” Certification Program is So Important…

EVERY PROGRAM IS UNIQUEHow would you like to take the first step with an internationally-acclaimed, Yoga Alliance-accredited school?

We are The Center For Yoga Studies at Sonic Yoga NYC. Since 2001, we’ve offered our highly-regarded 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Certification Program. And, in 2007, we’ll be introducing a number of more-specialized certifications.

If you are exploring learning to teach yoga, we’d love to be your teachers, mentors and champions. But, it’s also so critical that you find the program that fits you best. So, here are a few things you should know about our program. When you train and certify with us…

  • You’ll Attend a “Registered” Yoga Alliance school. Why does that matter? While there are no licensing requirements for yoga, Yoga Alliance has established widely-adopted standards for education and certification at the 200 and 500-hour levels. Schools must navigate a rigorous review process in order to become “Registered” and then graduate “Registered Yoga Teachers.” (RYTs). You can “only” become an RYT if you’ve graduated from a Registered Yoga Alliance School. So, if it’s important to you to become registered as a YA teacher, just be sure that any schools you look at not only “follow” the Yoga Alliance standards, but are actually “registered” and accredited by them.
  • You’ll benefit from the experience and reputation of established, internationally-acclaimed school. Over the last 5-years, we’ve graduated hundreds of teachers and grown from one to nearly 10 graduating classes a year in two different languages. Why is this sooo important to you? Because, you benefit not only from the experience of our amazing faculty and strong-reputation, but from our voracious quest to constantly improve, add-to and refine the program every time we present it. From cutting-edge, multimedia anatomy presentations to ancient healing mudras, you will experience the best in professional yoga education in an easygoing, super-friendly and supportive environment.
  • You’ll learn to teach & embody vinyasa flow yoga – In our program, you’ll learn how to practice and teach the flowing “vinyasa” style of yoga. You’ll learn to align and sequence every element of the practice in a method we call “creativity bounded by a framework of therapeutic intelligence.” Translation – have fun, let your muse out, but keep it save and healing.
  • You’ll learn anatomy & biomechanics in a way that makes it truly come alive. Because of the dynamic, physical nature of vinyasa yoga, we dive into modern anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. But, we do it in a way that makes it a lot of fun, highly-experiential and, often-times, eye-opening. In addition to actually “experiencing” your anatomy, you’ll see the body through the eyes of cutting-edge computer animations and presentations and even multimedia cadaver-studies. We also cover some highly-unique topics like The Art & Science of Flexibility, Reflexes and Instant Release Techniques and more.
  • You’ll not-only learn about the subtle-body, but actually experience how to feel and move prana or lifeforce and teach deeply-transformative subtle-body techniques. We don’t stop at the modern body. When you study with us, you’ll also learn about the subtle “energy” body, Chakras, Nadis, Koshas, Vayus, Pranayama (breathing exercises or techniques to “free lifeforce”), meditation, chanting and its effect on the body and mind, mudras, ayurveda basics and so much more. But, you won’t just learn about it, you’ll experience it’s effect on your body, mind and spirit. Armed with a strong working knowledge of both the modern and subtle body, you’ll be able to impact your students bodies, minds, spirits and lives on a whole different level.
  • You’ll have FUN & connect with a wonderful, lighthearted community! When we launched Sonic Yoga in New York’s buzzing Hell’s Kitchen district, we were on a mission to create a super-friendly, non-intimidating, joyous community where anyone, from any walk of life could learn yoga and “fit-in.” We take the impact of the practice seriously, but we take ourselves and our community very lightly. This same warm energy pervades The Center’s teaching certification program. No doubt, you’ll work very hard, but you’ll also be surrounded by a wonderfully-lighthearted, non-judgmental, energetic community that, very-often, leads to the cultivation of lifelong friendships.
  • You’re investment will be very-affordable and, with intensive and extended weekend and evening programs, you can choose the schedule that fits your needs. We realize that most people need to work full-time or care for family, while pursuing their teacher certification. To honor this, we have priced our program extremely competitively and built it around real-life scheduling that is designed to accommodate to a wide range of lifestyles with power weekends, flexible weekly mentor pairings, staggered on different times and days and an extensive schedule of classes to choose from. (see right column for local details). In fact, while we are one of the largest, most-established programs in New York City, we are also one of, if not, the most affordable, often, by a wide-margin.
  • You’ll be well-equipped to find a job or start a career. During the program, you will learn many powerful techniques to get experience, build a resume, get a job teaching class and build a private client base. In fact, using many of these tools, our alumni have developed thriving private practices and now teach all over the country and world. Here’s just a sampling of the places our grads have taught:

“One of the most powerful moments I have ever experienced in my life...”

“In this moment, only days out of my training, I feel as if I am walking around with this fragile gift in my pocket. I know I have to share it with the world, I know I truly have been blessed. I stumble over my words to explain my gratitude because they all seem too nominal…the “official” closing was one of the most powerful moments I have ever experienced in my life. As Lauren said, “Our spirits say all that is needed to be said without words.” Let’s just say my spirit had lots to say.” – Erin McDonnel –

“Best thing I’ve done after marrying my hubby and giving birth…

“Best thing I’ve done after marrying my hubby and giving birth, was definately a life changing experience…I was able to finally be true to myself about a lot of things I’ve been struggling with my entire life.” – Julie Deane –

BENEFIT FROM EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & PASSION

Knowing and really connecting with the people you’ll be studying with is so important…don’t you think? Our program is co-directed by Sonic founder, Lauren Hanna and Johanna Aldrich and Will Duprey, and is taughte by them along with a small number of wonderful teachers, handpicked for their expert knowledge, compassion and ability to inspire and teach teachers.

Since 2001, we’ve graduated hundreds of teachers from all over the United States, France, Spain, U.K., Russia, Hungary, Poland, Israel, Japan, China, Indonesia, Central and South America, the Dominican Republic, Canada and beyond.

In fact, many or our international graduates have flown to New York City just to take our training and bring what they’ve learned back to their home-states and countries. In order to better accommodate the quickly-growing international demand for our programs, we now offer trainings in two languages, English and Japanese, and it looks like Spanish, Mandarin and Italian may be in the works.

During your training, you’ll study directly with the school Directors, the dynamic team that heads up Citysearch #1-rated Sonic Yoga NYC and had Yoga Journal proclaiming they “raise the bar for yoga innovation!”

About Lauren. Lauren has taught and trained thousands of students and hundreds of teachers, as well. She studied directly under Shri Dharma Mittra for ten years, before exploring the teachings of Ana Forrest, Angela Farmer and her current teacher, Shiva Rea, whom she also assists on a regular basis and serves as a Mentor in her teaching program. Lauren’s passion for the marriage between flow and the subtle body and her depth of knowledge and practice have led her to be known as one of the very-best “teachers’ teachers.” Lauren also regularly leads international retreats and has been featured in the press, including appearances in The New York Times, Bazaar, Yoga Journal, Time Out NY, Hamptons View and more.

About Johanna. Johanna was raised by a family of itinerant clowns in the forests of Western Maine, before discovering that her freakish ability to make people smile by wrapping her tongue fully around to her ear could make her a lot of money. She parlayed this extraordinary talent into a million-dollar career before retiring at the age of four. After writing her memiors by age five, she decided to devote herself to dance, breath and movement and, so, chose the most obvious path, investment-banking, before finally finding a home as a fabulously acclaimed dancer, performer and choreographer. Sometime between age 7 and 47 (she’s 106 now), she stumbled into Sonic Yoga’s teacher training program became certified, wowed us all from day one and began teaching to regular standing applause, laughter and, of course, tongue-wagging, ever since. She became one of the first people invited onto our teacher training faculty, and since then has also completed 500 hour training with the legendary Dharma Mittra and recently became a co-director of our growing school.

About Will Duprey William Duprey, ERYT 500, is an initiate of Sri Dharma Mittra and teaches Hatha Yoga. His first yoga teachers were Jonathan Fields and Lauren Hanna at Sonic Yoga in New York, NY. In 2003, he graduated from their 200-hr. Teacher Training Program and began teaching at Sonic. Shortly thereafter, he began studying with Dharma Mittra, who was the first main independent Yoga teacher on the East Coast. Will moved to Los Angeles, CA. in 2003, but returned to New York to undergo an initiation process with Dharma.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Will has been teaching public yoga classes and private yoga sessions full time. In 2005, Will also began studying with Dr. Raam Pandeya, a master of Kayakalpa medicine, which is a specialized field of alchemical practice revered in the Ayurveda and Siddha medical systems of India.

Will integrates his studies of hatha yoga, raja yoga, and Kayakalpa into his teachings, as well as a solid knowledge base grounded in a five-year personal practice. Viewing yoga as a system of personal transformation, he encourages students to discover inner awareness and reach new heights. He is known for his uplifting and humorous teaching style and his ability to integrate philosophy and subtle energy flow into his classes.

About Jonathan. In addition to teaching 1,000s of students and training hundreds ofteachers, Jonathan currently writes the Bridging the Gap column for fitYOGA Magazine, has a regular column in Yogi Times Business magazine and contributes to many other lifestyle publications, including Yoga International. He’s also passionate about the study of body from a Western standpoint and, in addition to studying with a number of widely-known and more recluse yoga and spiritual teachers, he has also collected numerous fitness and therapeutic certifications and co-investigated the first-ever published study on the metabolic cost of vinyasa yoga with Adelphi University in 2003. Jonathan is widely featured in the media, including appearances in Yoga Journal (7-times), fitYOGA, Vogue, Self, Fitness, Elle, Time Out NY, Outside, The New York Times, Post and Daily and many others. He is currently writing a book on passion-driven careers for Random House/Broadway Books, due out in January 2009.

Lauren, Johanna, Will and Jonathan are joined by a small family of extraordinarily gifted, knowledgeable and compassionate Teacher Training faculty. Most importantly, though widely-known as gifted “teachers’ teachers,” they are just a couple of very-real, very-present individuals who are crazy about sharing what they know.

Our Facilities. As our demand for our programs has grown, so, too has our space. All early 2007 programs are taught at Sonic Yoga NYC’s convenient midtown facilities, with the main studio location at 754 Ninth Avenue at 51st St and a second training location at 54th & 8th Avenue.

Ninety-nine percent of our graduates recommend our school to friends, family and others. Here what some have to say about their experience in the program…

“The change that went on for each person during the four-week intensive was amazing!”

It felt like every single participant grew both physically and spiritually. Not sure that any other training programs could match the level of attention that this one did.” - Kathleen Carlson –

“I feel so much more confident that this is my life’s calling and I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”

Thank you for the amazing energy and dedication you continuosly demonstated throughout the program! I am truly grateful for what you guys do and how inspired I am by the passion you exude in your work. I entered the TT program not knowing where it would take me and felt really unsure about whether I was even ‘cut out’ to be there, but now that I have reached the end, of sorts (which is really a beginning), I feel so much more confident that this is my life’s calling and I am exactly where I am supposed to be. You truly exemplify the love, wisdom, preseverance and generosity that embodies yoga and I feel very lucky to be able to witness that and be a part of it in my own little way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for shining your inner light so gracefully as you help so many others discover their own.” - Silvia Shu –

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE AN ASANA-ROCKSTAR

You may be wondering, “Am I ready? Is my practice good enough to do this? Am In strong enough?” We know that some schools require you to be able to perform certain postures flawlessly before you can apply. That’s just not us!

We look at passion, compassion, commitment to learning and living consciously and the desire to share the practice much more than a person’s physical abilities. Many people come to our trainings with widely varying backgrounds, from public school phys-ed teachers who are fairly new to the practice, but want to share it with their inner-city students to people who’ve been practicing a lifetime.

We realized early-on that, if we excluded people based solely on their physical practice or experience-to-date, we would have kept a lot of amazing people with soaring spirits out of the program, so we decided not to set arbitrary posture requirements that really tell us very little about a person’s ability and desire to become a great teacher.

In fact, we’ve had a lot of people in the program with newer posture practices who were looking to simply teach at their current skill level and expand what they teach as their own practice, knowledge and abilities developed. We’ve even had a number of pregnant women and students with a variety of physical challenges complete the program.

That said, the vinyasa style of postures that we teach are physical and dynamic and you’ll be practicing a lot, so the fitter and more competent you are with the basic postures and movements, the more comfortable you’ll feel. You should know the basic postures and movements and have a regular (2-4 times a week) practice, before beginning the program. But you don’t have to be an asana-rockstar to complete the program and change peoples’ lives.

Remeber, too, whether you’re newer to the practice or have years under your belt, your physical abilitie and practice will be in a very different place by the end of the program!

NOBODY’S GOING TO GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO
MAKE YOUR DREAM COME ALIVE!

Completing teacher-training with us is a powerful investment
not only in your career, but in your body, mind and spirit

But more importantly, thank you for initiating a program that allows people to explore themselves in a thoughtful, safe environment. In our world today, we need this desperately. With much love” - Alexis Azria –

I am beginning to digest some of the material we were taught and still can’t believe how many priceless pearls we were given. Thank you for sharing your individual light with my classmates and I.” - Emilya Z –

“In a field where teaching styles vary tremendously, and are often highly personal to the individual yogis, you guys cater to it all! You exemplify the yin and yang in your expressions of teaching and my education has been fuller because of that…I felt safe and supported in the environment that was created, so that I could throw my heart and sweat into the program and learn through my mistakes in a place that I consider my home! Thank you both!” – Grace Hsu-”I would highly recommend this program to interested students. It felt intelligent and thoughtful in it’s design and execution. It was a magical experience-I can’t thank you enough.” – Liz Ackerman -

“I feel like I now have a firm basis from which to grow, I have initial knowledge of many of the aspects of yoga. I am enormously grateful for the sense community that growing with the other students has given me. I also love that Jonathan and Lauren have such different, but similar, approaches, i.e., the interests are different, but the goals are the same. It really made clear the fact that there is no one path and that yoga is truly multi-dimensional…I just want more of everything! Can’t say enough great things about this program!” -Anja J-

“The teacher training program has been a gift to me. It came at a time in my life when I needed to look deeper into myself and this program helped me explore who I am, what I want to strive for in this life and how to be at peace with myself. With mixed feelings this program ended, but now I am moving on to new adventures with greater openness.” – Lynn Precht -

“I wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you and extend that to all of the sonic kula! The tt was amazing–like a dream come true for me. As you know, my love for yoga is real, committed and devoted. Yet, I hadnt realized how focused I was on the asana aspect–sort of neglecting the other elements therein. The tt gave me a glimpse–an overview of so much more. I say a glimpse since this area is one to be explored and delved into daily for the rest of my life. The attention to detail from all our teachers was incredible. Thanks again for allowing me the honor to be a part of this awesome journey, kula and yoga family.” – Sarena Kopceil –

“I have been actively teaching yoga for the past year and a half that I have lived in Cleveland. I just wanted to say that I am so proud to have graduated from your teacher training. You both gave me some invaluable lessons, but did it in such a lovely way, that in retrospect, I appreciate your studio and both of you even more than before!” – Erin Esposito Peron -

“I enjoyed the balance of information – the biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and kinesiology from Jonathan helped me really understand the asana practice; the history of yoga and the spirituality from Lauren validated my desire to practice, teach and understand all of what yoga is about. The program has opened me in so many ways. My outlook on life has become so much more positive and I have reclaimed the joy within myself and my desire to that joy through teaching yoga.” – Charlotte Biancone –

“May I say how much I love learning from you. I feel blessed. I hope you know what you guys are doing, matters. I’m sure you do.” – Miranda -“An extremely valuable learning experience that helped deepen my practice and understanding of yoga…I loved the teacher training—fantastic!”- Keith Wittenstein -

“I loved the mix of modern biomechanics with the traditional yoga approach…I loved breaking down the alignment for each pose, my understanding is much stronger in this area now and I learned great techniques for adjusting and facilitating…My knowledge base for teaching was greatly strengthened and I learned so much about myself, especially where I can explore letting go even more.” – Paul Keoni Chun -

“Your compassion and will enable you to explore your physical and inner self and tap into your teacher. Their charisma and hand extend beyond the classroom, creating a constant learning environment. The yogic principles–yamas, niyamas, asana, pranayama, dharma, dhyana are explored continuously, as well as key pieces of yogic literature. A thorough anatomical standpoint of the body is also a key focus. Studying with them has been a constant samadhi. Namaste” – Will Duprey -

“The teacher training program at Sonic Yoga has been a truly motivational experience. I left the program with a priceless knowledge of yoga that advanced my personal practice to an extremely satisfying level. Jonathan’s love for anatomy and Lauren’s depth of meditation and flow make the perfect mix for anyone who desires to educate and truly benefit from their yoga journey.” – Joelle Carter

“I thought as I came into the program I would do my work and walk away – but it turned out to be a place that, beside opening my eyes to whole new ideas about spirituality and movement, I also made friends as well as started to understand what was important in my life…I didn’t expect yoga to become my life. My body, my heart and mind all changed dramatically. I also began to learn what it would be to accept the moment and not want any more or any less.”"The weekends were excellent – packed with information and also inspiring…had a profound effect on my attitude and how I walk through my day! I also had no idea how much I liked teaching. It has served as a huge creative outlet for me and that I definitely was not expecting.” – Tina Franco-
